(Moscatello di Taggia)
Nectar of the Gods
An excellence of
Ligurian viticulture
Ferrari Giacomo
Winery
The FERRARI GIACOMO winery started its wine-growing activity after 2010, planting the ancient ‘Moscatello di Taggia’ vine in the places where this precious nectar was already produced hundreds of years ago. On the strength of his experience in the agricultural field, he conducts his vineyards using environmentally friendly methods combined with winemaking techniques aimed at maximising aromas and quality.
The Vineyards
The vineyards are located in the municipality of Terzorio, where Moscatello di Taggia was already cultivated in the 16th century.
Our family has recultivated land that is particularly suited to the cultivation of this vine, as it lies on the terraced hills typical of our Ligurian Riviera, at an average altitude of 300 m above sea level, with southern, south-eastern and western exposure.
The soils have been recovered from almost a hundred years of abandonment and are free of all forms of pollution.
All this makes it possible to obtain a blend that enhances the particularity of this vine, guaranteeing the quality of the product.

The Moscatello
Vine cultivation in the Taggia area in the late Middle Ages was important for the production of Moscatello, a wine described as ‘a very sweet nectar’ that was marketed throughout the westernmost part of Liguria.
In the 1400s, Moscatello was exported throughout northern Europe, but the rise of the olive tree caused a reduction in production and it became a niche market for the nobility.
The phylloxera invasion of 1880 caused the almost total extinction of Moscatello. The tendency to rediscover native vines led to the search for Moscatello vines at the end of the 20th century, thanks to passionate winegrowers such as Eros Mammoliti. The plant was isolated thanks to collaboration with the University of Turin and modern genetic techniques.
In 2000, it was possible to renew the production of Moscatello and in 2014 the Associazione Produttori Moscatello di Taggia (Association of Moscatello di Taggia Producers) was founded, with the aim of promoting Moscatello di Taggia and making it known.
